The Old Fashioned with a twist

16 August 2016

Traditionally made with bourbon, progressively made with Glenfiddich; the Old Fashioned is a tipple loved by all. Its lingering sweet finish and warm, spicy flavours also make it the perfect rule-breaking cocktail. With this in mind, we asked a few of our ambassadors from around the world to suggest an experimental twist to this old favourite.

Rose buds

The Casablanca takes it's inspiration from the golden age of cinema and is perfect for a night in front of the big screen.

ingredients:

- 50ml Glenfiddich 15 Year Old
- 10ml Maverick Elixir sugar syrup
- Plenty of ice
- 150ml filtered water
- Flamed orange peel
- 1 spoon of loose leaf Lapsang Souchong tea
- 4-5 damask rose buds
- Generous helping of raw sugar

Method

To make the Maverick Elixir syrup, add filtered water to a pot and bring to the boil. Remove from heat for a few minutes. Add the sugar, tea and rose leaves and allow to brew. Strain and cool. Add Glenfiddich to the mixture and pour over ice into a rocks glass. Garnish with a flamed & twisted orange peel.

A maverick twist by Mitch Bechard, US Ambassador

 chocolate

Dark with a dalliance into citrus, the Chocolate Old Fashioned is perfect for a night by the fire. A brilliant introduction to the old fashioned.

ingredients:

- 50ml Glenfiddich 15 Year Old
- 2 dashes of xocolatl mole bitters
- 1 sugar cube
- Orange zest
- Green & Black Organic 85% dark chocolate

Method

Begin by muddling sugar cube and bitters with a splash of water. Stir until dissolved. Add 1 oz of Glenfiddich 15 Year Old and 2 large ice cubes. Stir. Add in final ounce of whisky and continue stirring until all ingredients are married together. Twist the zest of an orange peel over the drink, then rim it around the glass and place into the cocktail. Serve with 2 squares of the chocolate on the side to complement the taste of the bitters.
